I had known where he lived. Willy mentioned a while back that he and Colt divided up some land. And in this town it never took long to get anywhere. When I pulled up, he was on his porch sipping a beer, a shotgun resting against one of the spools of his wraparound. “Heard you might be coming.”
Well, thanks a lot, Carrie.
“That was quick. I guess I should’ve known she’d call as soon I left. You guys always seem to have each other’s backs.”
“What do you want, Tuck?”
“We’re both grown men. Why don’t you come on down and leave the gun behind.”
He stood, leaning over the railing, his eyes narrowed. “My kid is inside and my pregnant wife. Get the fuck off my property.” Just as I was feeling brave and taking strides to go to him, I heard the sound of a truck rumbling up the drive. It came to a screeching halt, the door slamming a second later. I didn’t even need to turn to know who was standing behind me.
“Everything all right?” Colt asked, stepping past me and made his way to the porch joining Cade.
Cade remained statuesque, staring me down, and not answering Colt’s question. So I did. “It’d be fine if I got some fucking answers from you two.”
“What answers are you looking for Reed?” A quick movement of the curtain behind Cade’s head told me his wife was watching.
“Seven years ago I fell in love with your sister. I left to make her proud and to come back home knowing I was worthy, but I never got the chance seeing as someone sent me a letter pretending it was from her. Now, I know it’s been a long time, but I need to know who and why?”
They both looked at each other like they were expecting the other one to answer, but they both gently shook their heads and then turned to me. “We don’t know what letter it is you’re talking about,” Cade growled.
“Bullshit!”
Cade shrugged. “It’s no secret that I was glad Caroline went off to college and forgot about you. But, I would never lie to her.”
“Me either,” Colt added. “You still have that letter?”
“No, I burned it along with every one she ever sent me.”
Cade left his gun put, came down the steps of his porch and walked toward me with his hands slightly raised at his sides telling me he wanted no trouble. “I never really had an issue with you, man, until I heard about the bet. Well, then I wasn’t so keen on you at all. Of course I told her about it. She was already upset about something to do with you. I never asked what.” He sighed. “You’re both adults now and it’s her life and we trust her. Maybe not you so much, but we love her and we’ll stand by her whatever she chooses in life. And this guy, Blair that she’s seeing may stay or he may go, we don’t know. Leave her alone to figure it all out.
